Archibald is an our 10hh Shetland pony. He is a true gentleman, very quiet and gentle with impeccable manners. He has many years of experience teaching beginners to ride and takes great pride in his job.
George is a total superstar in the arena. Likes to be teacher's pet and the centre of attention. He absolutely loves to be in the school, teaching his pupils and would do every lesson if he could!
Red is a kindly old chap who, at 20 years old, has seen it all and nothing phases him. He particularly enjoys a trail ride but is very reliable and sensible in the arena too.
Sammy is an ex-trotter and a gentle giant, standing at 16hh. He is kind, cuddly and patient with a steady rhythm, ideal for adults and tall teens.
Shazam is a kind and intelligent chap, who enjoys quiet cuddles and lots of praise from his riders. Although sometimes opinionated, his riders all adore him.
Trevor is a cheeky little chappy with a big personality. He hasn't been with us long but is settling into his role nicely and takes care of his students.

Pony Days are a great way to build on your Child's knowledge as we cover the basics of horse care, tack, feeding, breeds, markings etc. using fun games and worksheets. We always go for a ride and organise exciting afternoon activities, from treasure hunts with horsey clues, to on foot showjumping and pony club games!
Thinking of bringing a horse or pony into your life but don't feel confident you have all the knowledge and tools to ensure the high level of welfare they deserve?
We will be offering a course for adults and older children to gain the insight and discipline it takes to keep a horse happy.
Struggling with your horse?
If you have a horse or pony over 14hh that could use a little time with an experienced horse trainer, we might be able to help.
Each horse's situation is different so drop us a message to let us know what you need help with and we'll get back to you.
We always need a helping hand here! If you are reliable, experienced, and confident handling horses, and would like to help out with lessons or a pony day, please get in touch!
Get in touchWeight can be a sensitive subject, but it is crucial that we consider the weight each horse can carry, for the sake of their welfare. This includes the weight of the tack and equipment, as well as the rider.
You'll be matched to a horse based on your size and riding ability, so it's important that you provide accurate information so that the most suitable horse can be provided.
Wear comfortable long pants and closed-toe shoes with a small heel. Bring a water bottle, sunscreen, and arrive a few minutes early for your lesson.
Like schools, our lessons run to term times, so we ask families to commit to either weekly or fortnightly lessons for the term. If you are looking for a one-off lesson, do get in touch. We can take height and weight details and let you know if an opening becomes available. Pony Days, which run over 3 hours during the holidays, are a great way to introduce children to horses. We do grooming and tacking up, riding time, fun and educational puzzles and sheets and finish with horse themed games, treasure hunts or on foot showjumping competitions!
We have a range of well-trained horses and ponies to suit all ages, experience levels, and riding goals — from complete beginners to more confident riders.
Lessons may be cancelled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours' notice. Late cancellations or no-shows may incur the full lesson fee. In the event of unsafe weather or horse welfare concerns, lessons may be rescheduled at our discretion.
We teach complete beginners to experienced riders from age 3 upwards.
We teach English style riding in English style saddles.
Yes — lessons are paid for at the time of booking.
We would be delighted to schedule lessons with your own horse.
Riding isn't for everyone. If you want to book a taster session, book a 30 minute lesson and let us know in the notes that it is a trial session.
We have a 20 x 60 arena, a large 20 x 20 round yard, wash bay, on-site parking, coffee machine, comfortable lounge, spare helmets and spacious stalls available. Toilets are available on request in the main house.
Yes, for the sake of our equids' welfare we have rider weight restrictions in place, as per the policy set out by the British Horse Society (BHS). BHS recommends that a horse or pony is asked to carry no more than 10% of its ideal bodyweight if performing at an extremely high intensity, and 18% of its ideal bodyweight in other circumstances. At Gawler River Park the horse you will ride is chosen carefully, to reflect the rider's height, weight and ability. Riders (and parents) must accept that there are some horses that are not sufficiently robust to carry over a certain load safely. On occasion we may not have any horses suitable, or their current workload may mean they do not have availability at that time.
